Charlies Change

Bridging the Gap Between Grassroots Youth Education and Animal Welfare

My absolute greatest passion is making the Earth a better, lighter place in whatever small way I can. As my journey has evolved, it has shifted from frontline rescue centres to creating a bridge of change between grassroots development projects and animal rights.

I often feel completely overwhelmed by the number of animals in distress and in need. But then, I remind myself of the starfish story: one person can make a difference, and one person does make a difference. As humans, we have a moral obligation to stand up for those who cannot do so for themselves—whether human or animal. We need to get our hands dirty, make the time, and do what we can, where we are, with what we have. There is always something you can do. Always.

Charlie’s Story ..

Charlie, a wonderful, chunky hippo of a pit bull, was my first rescue and my first love. He is a true legend, a soul who, taught me through his soulful eyes about commitment, courage, sacrifice, friendship, and unconditional love. He taught me to be in the moment.

In 2017, this incredible soul entered my life, bringing all his wisdom with him, and what an adventure it has been. True to his hero self, Charlie continues to stand by my side, patiently teaching me to be present, to see, and not to judge.

Charlie had a bumpy start on Earth, and as fate played her hand, he found me. He was the very first dog I rescued, and from 2017 onward, he pivoted my life. I realised that having wonderful, well-managed rescue centres was too far down the line in the cycle of abuse. I was looking at the wrong end of rescue. I needed to go back to the grassroots level and stop the circumstances that cause neglect and abuse much closer to home. I needed to bridge change through grassroots programmes and become a funding platform that ensures the funds reach where they are most needed—basic education in self-care, including animal welfare.

Charlie changed the course of my life and redefined what it truly means to have hope, to act with compassion, and to never turn a blind eye. He taught me that you don’t run away from a problem — you run toward it to change it.

He came into my world with a love, a compassion, and big brown eyes that healed, taught, and transformed me.

He pivoted my life, and Charlie’s Change exists to honour his legacy by creating the lasting change he inspired.

Vision Statement — Charlie’s Change

Charlie’s Change was born from the red dust of Africa, where rescue meets reality and compassion meets exhaustion. It began with one dog — Charlie — whose story revealed a difficult truth:

Saving one animal matters, but unless you change the system, the suffering never ends.

Nearly a decade on the frontline showed us how poverty and cruelty intertwine, how animal abuse and human hardship share the same roots, and how the people fighting it — rescuers, teachers, and grassroots changemakers — are stretched between saving lives and trying to fund that work. Too often, compassion burns out long before the need does.

Charlie’s Change rose to close that gap.

Not as a rescue.

Not as another shelter.

But as a clean-funding platform built to support credible, well-managed, community-rooted projects — the people who show up where animals and children are both at risk.

Charlie’s story became the blueprint:

Compassion must have structure.

Compassion must become action.

And love must be paired with accountability, consequences, and real, measurable change at grassroots level — beginning with education projects, compassion-based initiatives, and youth-driven animal-rights programmes that reshape how communities understand animals, responsibility, and care.

Our purpose is to bridge youth education and animal welfare, because kindness taught early becomes compassion practiced for life. Children who learn respect for animals grow into adults who build healthier communities. When animals and youth thrive, communities rise — and lasting change becomes possible.

From Cape Town’s dusty shelters to classrooms across the world, Charlie’s Change carries one mission forward:

To turn compassion into action.

And action into lasting change.
